Red Light Runners Beware! Tucson Cameras Are Operational

If you are one of those drivers who believe "orange is OK" when it comes to going through an intersection, watch out--you'll get a ticket in the mail.

Tucson has contracted American Traffic Solutions, a Scottsdale-based company, to monitor and operate cameras at intersections deemed to be statistically accident-prone by TPD (Tucson Police Department).  They also operate a roving photo and radar van to catch suspected speeding violations.  Company employees operate the system and police officers review photos to determine whether citations should be forthcoming.  After comparing driver license pictures and license plate information to the offending photos, ATS is then given the tickets to mail to suspects.

Current sites with operational camera systems:

  • Oracle & River Rd (Saturday, March 30)
  • E. 22nd Street & Wilmot
  • S. Nogales Hwy & Valencia
  • E. Grant & Tanque Verde

Thanks for the warning Kent!!! I know Atlanta has the same thing, so I have to be really careful when visiting there!

Just keep an eye on these cameras. In out town they got the timing all messed up and ended up sending lots of folks a ticket who did not deserve one.

Great info Kent! We used to have those here in Charlotte (also had speed cameras), the program was ended though since state requires a % of the revenue goes to the schools and the actual % was not even close to what was required after the company operating them was paid their fees. I certainly don't miss them but they do make you more aware while driving around town :)

Jeremy - not a bad idea.  Thanks for the "heads up" about Atlanta.

Kevin - I'm skeptical about the accuracy of the photo/radar/human system too.  Guilty until proven innocent - if I ever get a ticket, I'll take my day in court.

Diane - I wonder if these will be cost-effective too. Hmmm...
